There is some research out of NYU in 2009 that implies that when we tell folks about our goals, we get a sense of “premature sense of completeness”. When I think about the process of writing my book, Good Talk, there were five things that I did that helped me keep on track:įind a tiny first step (the first domino) Although the adage “if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person” does seem to jive with Newton’s Law that “an object in motion tends to stay in motion”.it’s easy to get bogged down in the journey towards a big dream. The 13th was more than three feet tall and weighed about 100 pounds.īut we are not purely physical objects. The first was 5 millimeters tall and only 1 millimeter thick (it's actually smaller than a Tic Tac), so small that it needed to be set up with tweezers. In this video made by University of Toronto professor Stephen Morris, he set up 13 dominos. Bear with me: The Multiplier Effect: A Domino The Size Of A Tic Tac Could Topple A Building Big whoop, right? Okay, that might seem a bit underwhelming. In this 1983 study, University of British Columbia physicist Lorne Whitehead demonstrated the true power of the domino effect: dominoes can actually knock down things about one-and-a-half times their size. The domino is much more powerful than we realize. In the case of dominos, they are usually the same size. Mostly when people talk about “the domino effect” they are talking about this sort of chain reaction - one thing knocking over another thing. Instead, I knew how to set up long rows of dominos carefully and then knock the first one down, watching with glee as the rest fell in order, making that delightful clicky-clacky sound. When I was a kid, I loved playing with dominos.īut I didn’t know how to actually play dominoes like the older gentlemen did on the street corners in my neighborhood, on plywood boards atop trash cans. One handy way to deal with that dragon is to get curious about it. The third challenge, impostor syndrome, can take a bit more work to resolve. The domino effect can help you find the courage to get started and keep going. The domino effect is one powerful way to overcome two of these challenges: getting started and getting bogged down. How to achieve your dreams with the Domino Effect Several folks reached out to me to share how this idea resonated, so I thought I’d share some more ideas on how to create amazing things in your life. Oh, and my impostor syndrome usually circles back around at this point.Ī few weeks ago I shared some ideas on building a serendipity engine to help you connect and build a powerful network that can help you build a life you love. Other times Impostor Syndrome rears its ugly head and stops me in my tracks.Īnd even when I do get going on a big project, it’s easy to get bogged down in the middle, as the nuanced complexity and enormity of the thing starts to unfold. Sometimes I resist getting down to business because the task looks so large. I don’t know about you, but I love to procrastinate. Maybe, like me, you’re thinking about building something big in 2022. Often, it can be hard to get started on a big vision or a dream that seems out of reach.

The story gets a lot of humor out of Po Jack Black's voicing invests him with more personality than you'd expect from a character who resembles a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. The animation is much superior to your average 3-D feature about cute little animals, although the distortion caused by 3-D effects does it no favors. This is a film from DreamWorks, which is locked in competition with Pixar, and is swinging for the fences. It turns out that the mystery of Po's parentage is explained by Lord Shen's paranoia after a soothsayer ( Michelle Yeoh) tells him to beware of pandas, so their destinies are linked more deeply than Po can imagine. This Shen is a wicked foe, hurling sharp, pointed feathers from his tail like a circus knife-thrower. The kingdom now faces the prospect that it will be conquered and ruled by the evil peacock Lord Shen ( Gary Oldman), whose minions have designed a new weapon that causes him to scour the land for scrap iron. Of these Tigress is clearly the most formidable, and Mantis remains the enigma even though he sounds like Seth Rogen, how does he get past the weigh-in? As we rejoin events in this mythical Chinese kingdom, Po (voice of Jack Black), having attained the status of Dragon Warrior in the first film, still leads the Furious Five: Tigress ( Angelina Jolie), Mantis ( Seth Rogen), Monkey ( Jackie Chan), Viper ( Lucy Liu) and Crane ( David Cross). "LittleBigMac" is one heck of a soldier and still runs strong with my photo editing in Aperture and Photoshop. It still lives! The 13" MacBook Pro I had asked about so long ago it feels like. That was only the beginning after being challenged by a PC die-hard saying to me that it was impossible to upgrade a Mac. Just think a old 233Mhz slug getting a real kick in the rear with dual 1Ghz G4 processors. If only I could post pictures of my old "Yikes' PowerMac G4 which was pushed beyond all possible reasonable thought. The main reason I ask is I thought there would be more daring individuals who experiment with "older' systems just to see how far they can be pushed. That is until you fired up a game where the Intel GMA was demolished by having the old 128GB dedicated ATi Radeon 9700.īack onto the topic at hand, instead of people telling me "It can't be done' by reading documentation by Apple and such, I'm curious of the brave souls who have actually tried doing such a thing by thinking outside the box instead of only reading what specs Apple has posted on my particular MacBook Pro. Leopard does show it's age a bit especially on PPC and the 1.5Ghz single G4 it boasts but still eaten alive in general tasks by the original first generation white MacBook. Firing it up every so often reminds me how much the difference running on Intel hardware but also some nostalgic look and feel of the design that evolved into the first MBP. (A PowerBook G4 which still runs on its PATA limited 320GB internal HDD upgrade I performed as well as running its limit of 2GB of memory. I have had my intentions of having this computer last me at least six years as my last Mac did rather well longer than I ever had expected. I bought it for a fraction of the cost of the Apple USB SuperDrive. I'd rather not risk it as all the documentation is in Japanese. While I do have a older USB DVD RW drive that I picked up on eBay. HDD I/O was the highest in the overall score second only to the matched pair of memory sticks installed getting me to 8GB.Ĭoncerning the optical drive, I'd prefer to keep it in as some games I play on my system still have a CD/DVD check for the application to boot. The noticeable change after swapping out from the original drive was a noticeable improvement in both Macbench and even running the system score in Windows 7 via Parallels. A move to a SSD has been something I've thought about for a while but I enjoy the extra space by the Scorpio Black and it reports in OS X in the system profiler as 3Gb/s. The limit on my Mac is 3Gb/s thanks to the 7200 RPM drive I installed over the original drive which was held back by the slower rotational speed. Dan, some limits are only seen by slower drives. Our meandering conversation is peppered with shoe and skater lingo, his sentences traveling elliptically around each subject until suddenly veering into the heart of the matter.ĭekline's offices are casual, wide-open spaces, and Benzien himself is dressed low-key in a black hoodie, blue jeans and, of course, sneakers. For all his technical virtuosity, he still looks and sounds like a skater, with a laid-back tone reminiscent of Tommy Chong's burned-out stoner on That '70s Show, especially when he forgets he's being interviewed and verbal tics like "man" and "y'know" mix with the technical terms. Lanky and with a close-cropped haircut, Benzien at 34 still loves to tear up a shoe to see how it works, only now he knows what all that stuff is. At last month's Action Sports Retailers convention in San Diego, skate and shoe sellers repeatedly referred me to Dekline as the It company in the field. In just a few years of existence, Dekline has established itself as an industry leader in look and feel. Last year, sales of skate shoes grew 34 percent, faster than any other segment of the footwear market, according to retail market researcher NPD Group. Benzien co-founded the company in 2002 with Kevin Furtado, just as skate shoes began the transition from skateboarder-specialized regalia to hipster and hip-hop fashion. "When the shoe was done," he says, "I'd just slice it in half and say, 'Huh, I don't know what that is.'"īenzien and I sit in the showroom of Dekline Footwear's Logan Heights headquarters, where he's the lead designer. He bought them and wore them everywhere, until he wore them to death. August Benzien shakes up the skate shoe worldīack in 1985, 12-year-old August Benzien worked odd jobs for two months around his Stratford, Conn., neighborhood to save enough money to buy a pair of Nike Air Jordan Ones - the basketball shoes had hit the shelves just a year earlier. Certain topics and demonstrations on Bill Nye Saves the World simply warrant more coverage than would be possible in 22 or 28 minutes, as might be required of a show on broadcast television. Netflix is undeniably king when it comes to streaming TV shows, and the service has given Bill Nye and the rest of the team at Bill Nye Saves the World the resources and freedom to do whatever produces the best result rather than cram everything into a set number of minutes per episode. If you stop being nervous, quit doing it. But of course when you have more resources there's more pressure on the guy on camera. So the Netflix show, having more resources makes it easier in a way and more fun. By that I mean we flew the #BillMeetsScienceTwitter scientists from all over the world to the studio and we had just world class writers, Writers Guild writers, and they really in my view took things up a couple notches from the other cable shows I did in the early 2000s. And the other thing is we have resources on this new show. Because we're not constrained to 28 minutes 46 seconds or 22 minutes 30 seconds. According to Nye, Netflix has really enabled him to do more on television than was ever possible on broadcast television: Nobody knows everything there is to know about science, not even Bill Nye himself! In order to cover as much information as accurately as possible while still maintaining the fun on Bill Nye Saves the World, he brings in experts to weigh in on complex issues of science. There's certainly no shortage of topics to cover for adults. Instead of just doing Bill Nye the Science Guy 2.0 with his new show, he decided to go in a direction that would address the adults who are ready to expand their knowledge of science beyond what they learned as kids. Unbeknownst to those kids who only recognized Bill Nye for his work as a host and educator on Bill Nye the Science Guy, he has actually been furthering science on adult platforms for many years. What I'm saying - pun intended - is it's been an evolution. So I've been fighting the grown-up fight for decades and when Netflix came along with their remarkable resources, I jumped at the chance to make another show. I did Stuff Happens, I appeared on countless news shows as a commentator or commenter. And I remind everybody, after the Science Guy show, I did a show called The Eyes of Nye, I did the 100 Greatest Discoveries, Greatest Inventions. So this show is to address people who grew up watching the old show and I hope are ever more curious about the world around them and nature and our place in the cosmos. We did a hundred shows of the Science Guy show and we covered a lot of elementary science that everyone should know. |
